First let’s chat about what “404” and “Thank You” pages are…
Simply put, a “404 Page” is that page that pops up when the page you were trying to reach on a website couldn’t be found. It can look similar to the one below.
And a “Thank You, Page” is just that, a page that you are taken to after completing an action on a website.
I always include these 2 pages complimentary with every one of my Custom Web Designs + Semi-Custom Templates.
Let me tell you why.
With a “404 Page” you can turn a frustrating error situation into a pleasant user experience, and improve the overall perception of your business and retain potential customers.
Your website is an extension of your brand identity, and every interaction with your audience is an opportunity to reinforce that identity. By creating a custom 404/ Thank You page that aligns with your brand’s visual style, tone, and messaging, you can ensure a consistent experience across all touchpoints. This helps strengthen your brand’s recognition and reinforces the overall perception of professionalism and attention to detail.
A custom 404/Thank You page can be designed to include helpful navigation elements, such as a search bar, category links, or popular content suggestions. By providing these options, you can assist visitors in finding what they were looking for, even if they landed on a broken link. This not only helps retain users, but can also lead them to discover other relevant content on your website, potentially increasing engagement and conversions.
You can use these pages to showcase featured products, and promotions, or provide an incentive to sign up for your newsletter. This way, you can capture the attention of visitors who may have otherwise left your site and turn them into potential customers or leads.
FOR “THANK YOU PAGES”: You can include relevant forms or surveys on your “Thank You” page, which allows you to gather important customer data. You can ask for feedback, request reviews, or collect additional information to personalize future communications. This data can help you better understand your customers’ needs and preferences, enabling you to tailor your products or services to their requirements and improve your overall business strategy.
FOUR EASY THINGS TO MAKE SURE YOU DO WITH YOUR THANK YOU/ 404 PAGES.
Definitely include links to other pages/products on your site. Make it easy for your audience to engage and scope out different areas of your site (this helps your SEO too). You can even add a mini contact form, a search bar, category links, or popular content suggestions on these pages to help you track engagement and give your audience an option to contact you if they need to.
Keep it Cohesive! Just like all the other pages on your site, you want these pages to reflect your brand vibes. Using your brand colors/fonts/elements on these pages keeps everything looking cohesive and professional. Don’t forget to include a few photos on this page, too.
Keep It Simple! These pages do not need to be fancy. They simply need to match your brand vibes, have a quick header message, and include a few links to other site pages and/or a contact form.
Make sure you link them properly. Each website platform will have a slightly different process to link your each of your 404 page and “Thank You” Page. Make sure you link them up properly, so they will work the way you intended.
Want to hear how to make it even easier? Simply create your 404 page using the tips above, then duplicate that 404 page. Next, on the copied 404 Page, simply update all the text content with your “Thank You” page text. There you have it, 2 pages created in under an hour.
These Instructions can be used with any website platform (Squarespace, Wix, Showit, etc) but my free template is only compatible with SHOWIT
